I am ready to serve in the Chula Vista Elementary School District’s
Board of Education. Because I have an appreciation of the diverse needs
in the district and through my involvement have been fortunate to have been
granted the experience that will aide me in working together with fellow
Board Members in making the right choices for our schools, for our children.
I am certain that I can make a difference to the Board of Education in being
that I am someone who has been closely involved in my children’s school
of attendance and has truly understood what work is needed so all our children
can become well rounded adults with goals of higher education.
As a resident of the City of Chula Vista for 17 years, consequentially
my involvement with the Chula Vista Elementary School District began as
a parent. I started helping out as a classroom volunteer, where I noticed
how important parent involvement is for the development of children. I then
decided to take my volunteer work a step further and joined the Parent-Teacher
Association (PTA) of my children’s school. In 2004 I was awarded the
PTA Service Award.
In 1991 I was appointed as a member of the School Site Council. I have
served in different capacities over the last several years. I have worked
as Chair, Vice Chair and am currently serving as secretary. On the SSC I
became aware of a school’s funding and its various budgets and how
important it is to fund programs that would give not only our students that
extra incentive, but also give our teachers motivating staff development
which could then be positively applied in the classrooms.
Chula Vista is a very diverse community. The California Association of
Bilingual Education (CABE) is an important partner with the district. I
became a member of CABE in 2004 and work at keeping myself informed on the
issues at the local level. My involvement in CABE has given me the insight
into how important bilingual education is in our district allowing our students
to strive when faced with a new community and a new school.
I was then voted as Chairperson of the Chula Vista Elementary School District’s
Budget Advisory Committee from 2002-04 which is where I gained a good understanding
of the budget process at the district and site levels. We must ensure that
the prudent management of tax dollars is in place to allow continued access
to the tools and training required by our teachers to properly educate our
children.
While working to increase test scores, we must not lose sight that each
child is an individual and they deserve the best we have to offer in education.
I will work to ensure that our district will give each and every child the
same opportunity to excel. To accomplish this, as member of the Board I
will continue to work together with all district personnel, staff, teachers
and community members. I believe that in order to do this effectively we
must work together as a team, and be able to communicate across all areas,
establishing trust and accessibility to the community.
I am currently a business major at a SWC, having put off my education
to raise my children. I work part time at Scripps Mercy Hospital and currently
serve on the City of Chula Vista’s Board of Ethics. Serving on this
Board has granted me the experience of dealing with important issues with
objectivity and in an unbiased manner, which as a member of the CVESD Board
of Education I feel will prove to be invaluable.
I ask for your support this November 7th. I will proudly represent our
District on the Board of Education, being a parent and involved member of
this community with a personal vested interest in the future of Chula Vista
Elementary School District.
